A Colossal World Figure turns 90

Michael S. Karen, Editor, Moscow

On Tuesday, March 2nd Mikhail Gorbachev turns 90.
He was often considered the most popular person in the world when he was in power.

During his presidency, eighty percent of US and Russian nuclear weapons were destroyed. This was an unprecedented step towards peace and security in human history. He managed to instill a new hope, new trust and cooperation in international affairs. Mikhail Gorbachev’s vision of a united world as expressed in “his new political thinking” has proven quite extraordinary by all standards. For his leading role in the peace process ending the Cold War between the United States and Russia, he received the Nobel Peace Prize in 1990.
